I’m writing today from the beaches of Salvo, North Carolina.
Salvo is a coastal town in the Outer Banks of North Carolina; a 200 mile stretch of barrier islands off the Eastern coast of the United States.
I’m here for a much needed, week-long vacation.
Salvo is about a half hour away from the town of Kitty Hawk; the place where the Wright brothers made history by building and flying the first airplane.
That first flight, as you know, forever made the world a smaller place.
As I stood at the spot where the Wright brothers took their first flight, I was deeply inspired. For a brief moment, I imagined that fateful day back in 1903 when the whole world changed forever.
“The Wright Brothers created the single greatest cultural force since the invention of writing. The airplane became the first World Wide Web, bringing people, languages, ideas, and values together.” – Bill Gates
Orville and Wilbur Wright made more advances in aviation from 1900 to 1903 than all of the rest of mankind since the beginning of time.
Yet before they took that first flight, the Wright brothers had to endure ridicule, pessimism and doubt from those who said it coud not be done.
I’m glad they didn’t listen and instead followed their dream and passion.
I’m sure you are too.
Although people have dreamed about flying for thousands of years, the Wright brothers actually did it.
And the world will never again be the same because of it.
It all started with a simple idea, a vision and the courage and perseverance to make it happen.
So, my questions to you today are…
What have you been thinking about doing but keep putting off?
Who’s been talking you out of your dreams?
Why have you been listening to them?
Are you letting that little negative voice inside of your head talk you out of your plans?
Are you listening to the doubters and naysayers instead of following your heart?
Please keep this in mind…
No one ever built a monument to a cynic, a doubter or a critic.
As the Roman poet Virgil said over 2,000 years ago:
“Fortune favors the bold.”
And that wise advise is as important today as it has ever been.
Success and wealth always flows to those who are willing to step aside from the crowd and follow their own path.
The Wright brothers didn’t think about changing the whole world. If they did, they may have never accomplished what they did.
Instead, they just thought about flying. They followed their dreams and took action.
They refused to listen to the critics and naysers and as a result, they made the impossible possible.
And in case you think the Wright brothers were prodigies or something special, consider these facts:
1. They didn’t graduate high school.
2. They had no formal training in aviation or engineering; they were self taught.
3. They were bicycle shop owners.
4. They lacked funding for their project.
5. They did not have the latest technology.
6. They lacked support.
They just believed….and that was enough!
So, listen up…
It’s time to fly.
Whatever it is that you’ve been planning on doing or acheiving, it’s time to get it going.
You may not change the whole world as the Wright brothers did.
But then again, you just might.
